Goucher College
Goucher College, founded in 1885 as a women's college before going fully coeducational in 1986, has built a distinctive national reputation around a mandatory study-abroad requirement — every undergraduate must complete an international travel or study experience to graduate, a requirement Goucher was the first American college to make universally mandatory. The college's small size, around 1,300 undergraduates, and its wooded suburban Baltimore County campus give it an intimate, close-knit liberal arts college feel distinct from the larger public universities elsewhere in the state. Goucher's creative writing and dance programs have built particular strength relative to the college's overall size, and its low-residency MFA programs in creative nonfiction and other fields have drawn writers and students from well beyond the college's traditional undergraduate base. The college's combination of a genuinely mandatory global-education requirement and its small, personalized liberal arts setting has made Goucher a distinctive choice among Maryland's private colleges, particularly for students specifically prioritizing guaranteed international experience as part of their undergraduate education.
VS
Johns Hopkins University
Johns Hopkins University, founded in 1876 with a $7 million bequest from businessman Johns Hopkins, was the first American university built explicitly around the German research-university model, prioritizing original faculty research and graduate education over the more purely teaching-focused mission of most earlier American colleges — a founding approach that reshaped the entire structure of American higher education. The university's School of Medicine and its affiliated Johns Hopkins Hospital are consistently ranked among the very best in the country, and Hopkins has ranked first in total federal research funding among American universities for more than four decades running, a level of sustained research dominance no other university has matched over that span. Hopkins's Bloomberg School of Public Health is the oldest and largest independent school of public health in the world, and the university's role coordinating national and global public health data — including its widely cited COVID-19 tracking dashboard during the pandemic — reflected the institution's continued centrality to American public health research and policy. The university's Applied Physics Laboratory, operated for the US government, has contributed to numerous NASA missions including New Horizons' flyby of Pluto, giving Hopkins direct institutional involvement in major space exploration projects alongside its more widely known medical and public health research strength.
