Greg Louganis
Greg Louganis won Olympic gold medals in both the springboard and platform diving events at consecutive Olympics in 1984 and 1988, becoming the first male diver in Olympic history to sweep both events at back-to-back Games, and he's widely regarded as the greatest diver in the sport's history. At the 1988 Seoul Olympics, Louganis hit his head on the springboard during a preliminary dive, requiring stitches, before returning just minutes later to complete his remaining dives and ultimately win gold — a moment made more significant years later when Louganis revealed he was HIV-positive at the time of the incident. His public 1995 disclosure of his HIV status, along with his coming out as gay, made Louganis one of the most prominent openly gay and HIV-positive athletes in sports history, and his willingness to speak publicly about both aspects of his identity helped advance broader visibility for LGBTQ and HIV-positive athletes. Louganis's technical scores across his Olympic career remain among the highest ever recorded in the sport, and his combination of technical perfection and his later personal advocacy work have made him one of the most significant and respected figures in the history of Olympic diving.
VS
Guo Jingjing
Guo Jingjing won four Olympic gold medals in diving across the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Olympics, sweeping both the individual and synchronized springboard events at both Games, and she became one of the most commercially prominent Chinese athletes of her generation. Her combined six Olympic medals across four Games established Guo as one of the most decorated Chinese Olympians in any sport, and her sustained dominance in springboard diving throughout the 2000s made her the standard-bearer for China's continued institutional dominance of the sport. Guo's technical precision and consistency under pressure, particularly during her home Beijing Olympics in 2008, made her one of the most closely watched Chinese athletes of that Games, competing in front of a massive home audience with correspondingly intense national expectations. Her combined Olympic gold medal total and her sustained dominance across two consecutive Olympics have made Guo one of the most statistically successful divers in Olympic history, and her celebrity status within China extended her public profile well beyond the diving community specifically.
