Grilled Hamburgers
Grilled hamburgers became the anchor of the American backyard Fourth of July cookout largely alongside the postwar boom in suburban homeownership and the backyard charcoal grill through the 1950s, when a patty cooked outdoors over an open flame became a genuinely different, more celebratory food than the same burger fried on a griddle indoors. Louis' Lunch in New Haven, Connecticut, has claimed since 1900 to have served the first hamburger sandwich in the country, grilling a beef patty between two slices of toast for a customer in a hurry — a claim historians still debate against several competing origin stories, but one the tiny restaurant has built its entire identity around for well over a century. The backyard grilling ritual that eventually made the burger a Fourth of July staple owes as much to the postwar spread of the Weber kettle grill, patented in 1952, as to the burger itself — a genuinely new piece of consumer technology that turned outdoor cooking from a rustic camping activity into a mainstream suburban weekend and holiday tradition. Its combination of being simple enough for a home cook to grill for a crowd and flexible enough to top endlessly to taste has made the hamburger the single most universal centerpiece of the American Fourth of July cookout, the dish nearly every backyard gathering builds its spread around.

Grilled Corn on the Cob
Corn on the cob became a natural fit for the Fourth of July table both for its peak summer harvest timing — sweet corn is typically at its freshest across much of the country right around the holiday — and for how easily it can be thrown directly onto a hot grill alongside burgers and hot dogs with minimal preparation. Grilling corn in its husk, then peeling it back before serving, became a particularly popular backyard technique because the husk itself helps steam the kernels while the direct heat still gives the corn a light char, a combination that home cooks and barbecue restaurants alike have leaned into as the dish's signature preparation. Companies like the Green Giant brand, which built its identity substantially around canned and frozen corn products through the 20th century, helped popularize corn as a convenient, always-available side dish nationwide even as fresh, grilled corn on the cob remained the specifically celebratory, holiday-cookout version of the vegetable. Its combination of genuine seasonal timing, minimal grill-side preparation, and a satisfying char that plain boiled corn can't replicate has made grilled corn on the cob one of the most reliably present side dishes at Fourth of July cookouts across nearly every region of the country.
