Groton School
Groton School was founded in 1884 by Endicott Peabody, an Episcopal clergyman who modeled the school partly on English boarding school traditions and led it as headmaster for over half a century, embedding a strong emphasis on religious and moral education alongside academics. The school's most notable alumnus is President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who attended Groton before Harvard, and Peabody personally maintained a close relationship with Roosevelt throughout his life, including officiating at both of Roosevelt's weddings and later corresponding with him during his presidency. Groton's historically small enrollment, deliberately kept much smaller than many peer boarding schools, reflected Peabody's specific educational philosophy prioritizing close faculty-student relationships and a tightly knit community over institutional scale. Groton School's combination of its founder's deeply personal, multi-decade relationship with a future U.S. president and its deliberately intimate small-school philosophy has made it one of the most historically distinctive boarding schools in the country.
VS
The Lawrenceville School
The Lawrenceville School was founded in 1810 and is known distinctively for its "House System," a residential structure grouping students into smaller communities of roughly a dozen students living with a faculty family, designed to create a more intimate, family-like environment than a typical large boarding school dormitory. The school's Harkness-style round-table teaching approach, similar to peer institutions like Exeter, emphasizes small discussion-based classes over lecture formats, reflecting a broader shared philosophy among elite Northeastern boarding schools about how students learn most effectively. Lawrenceville's roughly 700-acre campus, designed in part by the Olmsted Brothers landscape architecture firm (sons of Frederick Law Olmsted, designer of New York's Central Park), gave the school a distinctive, carefully planned physical environment uncommon even among peer boarding schools. The Lawrenceville School's combination of its distinctive House System residential model and its Olmsted-designed campus has made it one of the most architecturally and communally distinctive boarding schools in the country.
