Gucci
Gucci was founded in 1921 in Florence, Italy by Guccio Gucci, who had previously worked at London's Savoy Hotel, an experience that reportedly inspired his appreciation for luxury craftsmanship and quality luggage that shaped his subsequent leather goods business. The brand's signature bamboo-handled handbag, introduced in 1947 during a period of leather shortages following World War II, became one of Gucci's most recognizable design elements, and the company's interlocking double-G logo became one of the most widely recognized luxury monograms in the fashion industry. Gucci experienced a significant creative and commercial revival under creative director Tom Ford during the 1990s, transforming the brand's image with a bolder, more provocative aesthetic that significantly increased Gucci's cultural relevance and sales after a period of declining brand prestige. Gucci's combination of its wartime-driven bamboo-handle design innovation and its dramatic 1990s Tom Ford-led revival has made it one of the most commercially and culturally significant luxury handbag brands in fashion history.
VS
Louis Vuitton
Louis Vuitton was founded in 1854 in Paris by its namesake trunk-maker, who developed flat-topped, stackable trunk designs specifically to replace the rounded-top trunks that had previously dominated luxury travel luggage, since flat trunks could be stacked far more efficiently during shipping and travel. The company introduced its now-iconic monogram canvas pattern in 1896, developed by Louis Vuitton's son Georges specifically to combat widespread counterfeiting of the brand's earlier striped canvas designs, and the LV monogram pattern remains one of the most recognized luxury fashion symbols in the world today. Louis Vuitton became part of LVMH, the world's largest luxury goods conglomerate, and the brand has consistently ranked among the most valuable individual fashion brands in the world, sustained through both its core handbag and luggage lines and extensive collaborations with contemporary artists and designers. Louis Vuitton's combination of its founding innovation in stackable travel trunk design and its enduringly iconic monogram canvas pattern has made it one of the most commercially valuable luxury handbag brands in the world.
