Gustavus Adolphus College
Gustavus Adolphus College, founded in 1862 by Swedish Lutheran immigrants, is named for the 17th-century Swedish king, and the college's Swedish heritage remains visible in campus traditions including its annual Nobel Conference, a public symposium bringing Nobel laureates to campus to discuss major scientific and social issues. The Nobel Conference, held continuously since 1963, is one of the longest-running public science symposiums in the country and gives the small liberal arts college a level of direct access to leading global scientists that few institutions of its size can match. Gustavus's rural St. Peter, Minnesota campus was struck by a devastating tornado in 1998 that destroyed thousands of trees and damaged numerous buildings, an event the college has since incorporated into its own institutional history and campus landscaping identity through a subsequent replanting effort. The college's strong pre-health sciences programs and its continued Swedish Lutheran cultural identity, combined with its distinctive Nobel Conference tradition, have made Gustavus Adolphus a distinctive choice among Minnesota's several Scandinavian-founded liberal arts colleges.

St. Olaf College
St. Olaf College, founded in 1874 by Norwegian Lutheran immigrants, maintains one of the strongest undergraduate music programs of any liberal arts college in the country, anchored by the St. Olaf Choir, whose annual Christmas Festival concert has been broadcast nationally on public television for decades. The college's continued affiliation with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America reflects its Norwegian immigrant founding, and St. Olaf's Norwegian-American heritage remains visible across campus, including in its Scandinavian studies program and its historic Norwegian-influenced architecture. St. Olaf's science programs, particularly chemistry and biology, send a high proportion of graduates on to medical school and doctoral programs relative to the college's size, reflecting a strong pre-professional science track alongside its equally strong music and humanities offerings. The college's location directly across town from rival Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, has fostered a friendly but genuine athletic and academic rivalry between the two schools, and St. Olaf's combination of a nationally regarded music program and strong science preparation has made it a distinctive choice among Midwestern liberal arts colleges.
