Half Acre Beer Company
Half Acre Beer Company started in 2006 as a self-distributed operation before opening its Lincoln Avenue brewery in 2008, part of the wave of Chicago craft breweries that emerged in Goose Island's wake and built the city's beer scene into something with genuine competitive depth. Daisy Cutter Pale Ale, released as one of the brewery's early flagship beers, became one of the most recognizable and consistently ordered Chicago craft beers in bars across the city, a rare case of a hop-forward pale ale achieving genuine everyday, go-to status rather than remaining a specialty pour. The brewery's expansion to a second production and taproom space on Balmoral Avenue in the Ravenswood neighborhood let Half Acre scale its output while keeping its original Lincoln Avenue location as a smaller, neighborhood-facing taproom, splitting the brand across two distinct Chicago identities. For a Chicago breweries list, Half Acre is the essential "hometown flagship beer" entry — the brewery whose Daisy Cutter Pale Ale became as close to a default Chicago bar order as any local craft beer has managed.
VS
Goose Island Beer Co.
Goose Island Beer Co. was founded by John Hall in 1988 on Clybourn Avenue, opening as one of the first craft breweries in a city that, at the time, had essentially no independent brewing scene of its own to speak of. That early, unglamorous starting point makes Goose Island's later influence on American craft beer even more notable — it didn't inherit a beer culture, it helped build one from scratch. The brewery's Bourbon County Stout, first brewed in 1992 as a one-off for its 1,000th batch, is widely credited with launching the entire modern category of bourbon barrel-aged beer, a style now produced by breweries worldwide but pioneered on Goose Island's original Clybourn Avenue system. Anheuser-Busch InBev's 2011 acquisition of Goose Island became one of craft beer's most debated ownership stories, dividing longtime Chicago drinkers between those who saw it as a loss of independence and those who credited the deal with dramatically expanding Bourbon County's national distribution and cultural reach. For a Chicago breweries list, Goose Island is the essential "the one that started it all, then got complicated" entry — the brewery whose Bourbon County Stout reshaped an entire beer category, even as its own ownership story became a lightning rod within craft beer culture.
