Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
"Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," published by J.K. Rowling in the UK in 1997 as "Philosopher's Stone," introduced the orphaned boy wizard Harry Potter as he discovers his magical heritage and enrolls at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, launching what became a seven-book global publishing phenomenon. Rowling reportedly wrote much of the novel while a struggling single mother receiving public assistance in Edinburgh, and the book's rejection by numerous publishers before Bloomsbury finally accepted it became one of the most frequently cited underdog stories in modern publishing history. The novel and its sequels drove a broader resurgence in children's and young-adult reading at a moment when the format was widely assumed to be losing ground to television and video games, with midnight release events for later installments becoming genuine mainstream cultural events. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone's combination of Rowling's underdog path to publication and its role in driving a global resurgence in children's reading has made it one of the most commercially and culturally significant novels ever published.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
"The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," published by C.S. Lewis in 1950 as the first-published volume of "The Chronicles of Narnia," follows four English siblings who discover a magical wardrobe leading to the land of Narnia, where they join the lion Aslan against the tyrannical White Witch. Lewis, a close friend and Oxford colleague of J.R.R. Tolkien within the informal literary group known as the Inklings, wrote the Narnia books with an explicit Christian allegorical framework, most directly reflected in Aslan's sacrificial death and resurrection at the story's climax. The novel's success launched a seven-book series that became one of the best-selling children's book series of the 20th century, and its imaginative portal-fantasy premise — an ordinary household object leading to an entire hidden magical world — became one of the most widely imitated devices in subsequent children's fantasy literature. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe's combination of Lewis's Christian allegorical framework and its hugely influential portal-fantasy premise has made it one of the most significant fantasy novels in children's literature.
