Haverford, PA
Haverford is home to Haverford College, founded in 1833 by members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) as one of the oldest Quaker-founded institutions of higher education in the country, and the college's wooded, arboretum-quality campus remains one of the most architecturally and botanically notable college grounds anywhere along the Main Line. That Quaker founding heritage shaped much of the broader area's early development, with several Main Line communities, Haverford included, tracing their earliest institutions and settlement patterns back to Quaker meetinghouses established well before the Pennsylvania Railroad turned the corridor into a commuter suburb in the 19th century. The community's residential character leans toward large, wooded properties set back from the road, a pattern consistent with much of the broader Main Line's development but especially pronounced around Haverford given the buffer created by the college's own substantial campus grounds. Served by SEPTA's Paoli/Thorndale Line, Haverford's combination of a historically significant Quaker liberal arts college and a genuinely wooded, low-density residential character has made it one of the more architecturally distinct and consistently sought-after stops along the Main Line corridor.
VS
Merion Station, PA
Merion Station sits at the eastern, Philadelphia-facing end of the Main Line, and it was home for decades to the original Barnes Foundation, a private museum housing one of the most significant collections of Post-Impressionist and early Modern art in the world, assembled by Albert C. Barnes and famously displayed according to his own idiosyncratic, non-chronological hanging system. The foundation's controversial 2012 relocation to a new building in Center City Philadelphia — fought for years in court by neighbors and preservationists who argued Barnes's will had explicitly required the collection to remain in Merion — became a nationally covered case study in the tension between an institution's founding wishes and the practical realities of expanding public access decades later. The Merion Cricket Club, founded in 1865 and still active today, reflects the broader Main Line tradition of English-inspired athletic and social clubs that took root among the area's wealthy Philadelphia families as the railroad suburbs developed through the late 19th century. Merion Station's combination of its complicated, closely watched history as the original home of a world-class private art collection and its continued genteel, club-oriented social character has made it one of the more culturally significant, if quietly modest-sized, communities along the entire Main Line corridor.
