Héctor Lavoe
Héctor Lavoe became one of salsa's defining vocalists during the genre's 1970s golden era in New York City, recording a series of albums with trombonist Willie Colón that are widely regarded as some of the most important releases in the genre's entire history. His distinctive, emotionally raw vocal phrasing, capable of conveying both celebratory joy and genuine personal pain within the same performance, gave his recordings a depth that distinguished him from more purely technically polished contemporaries within the same Fania Records roster. Lavoe's turbulent personal life, including struggles with addiction that were later dramatized in the 2006 biographical film "El Cantante," became inseparable from his artistic legacy, adding a layer of tragic authenticity to a catalog already built around genuine emotional expression. His combination of his foundational partnership with Willie Colón and his uniquely expressive vocal style has made Lavoe widely regarded as salsa's greatest and most influential vocalist.
VS
Tito Puente
Tito Puente built a career spanning more than five decades as one of the most important bandleaders bridging Afro-Cuban mambo, Latin jazz, and the salsa sound that grew directly out of those earlier traditions, releasing well over 100 albums across his career. His virtuosic timbales playing, a signature percussion instrument he helped popularize as a featured lead voice rather than a purely supporting rhythm section instrument, became one of the most recognizable individual musical signatures in all of Latin music. Puente's "Oye Como Va," later famously covered by Carlos Santana, became one of the most widely recognized Latin music compositions of the 20th century, introducing his sound to rock audiences who had never otherwise encountered Latin big-band music. His combination of his multi-decade catalog spanning mambo, Latin jazz, and salsa, plus his genre-crossing influence through "Oye Como Va," has made Puente one of the most foundational figures across all of modern Latin music.
