Herbert Nitsch
Herbert Nitsch holds more freediving world records than any other athlete in the sport's history, earning the nickname "the Deepest Man on Earth" for his 2012 no-limits discipline dive to 253.2 meters, the deepest breath-hold dive ever recorded by a human being. That record-setting dive nearly cost him his life, resulting in a severe case of decompression sickness that caused a stroke and left him with lasting neurological effects, an outcome that became one of the starkest illustrations of freediving's genuinely extreme physical risk at its absolute competitive limits. Nitsch's continued involvement in the sport following his recovery, including subsequent record attempts and his ongoing advocacy for freediving safety protocols, reflected a level of commitment to the sport that persisted even after experiencing its most severe possible consequences firsthand. His combination of his unmatched total world record count and his historic, if costly, no-limits depth record has made Nitsch widely regarded as the most accomplished depth-focused freediver in the sport's history.
VS
Alexey Molchanov
Alexey Molchanov, son of the legendary Natalia Molchanova, became the dominant men's competitive freediver of the 2010s and 2020s, setting numerous world records across multiple disciplines and continuing his mother's legacy as one of the sport's most technically accomplished competitors. His continued record-setting career following his mother's 2015 disappearance reflected both his own individual technical mastery and the direct training influence she had provided him throughout his development as one of the sport's rising competitors before her death. Molchanov's sustained dominance across constant weight and other depth disciplines throughout the following decade established him as the clear standard-bearer for men's competitive freediving, continuing the family's outsized influence on the sport's competitive history. His combination of his own extensive record-setting career and his direct continuation of his mother's freediving legacy has made Molchanov one of the most significant and technically dominant freedivers of the sport's modern era.
