Hero
"Hero" (2002), directed by Zhang Yimou, tells a politically layered story of a nameless warrior recounting his defeat of assassins plotting against China's first emperor, structured around competing, contradictory retellings of the same events from different narrators' perspectives. Its visually distinct use of color, with each retold version of the story rendered in its own dominant color palette, gave the film an unusually painterly, deliberately artificial visual style that distinguished it sharply from wuxia's more traditionally naturalistic cinematography. The film's large-scale desert and lake battle sequences, choreographed by Ching Siu-tung, combined the genre's traditional acrobatic combat style with an unprecedented sense of visual scale and grandeur for a Chinese-language martial arts production of its era. Its combination of its visually innovative color-coded narrative structure and its large-scale action choreography has made "Hero" one of the most artistically ambitious and internationally influential wuxia films of the 2000s.
VS
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" (2000), directed by Ang Lee, brought wuxia's traditional wire-fu combat and sweeping martial romance storytelling to unprecedented mainstream Western audiences, becoming the highest-grossing foreign-language film in American box office history at the time of its release. Its gravity-defying, wire-assisted fight choreography, including the celebrated bamboo forest duel sequence, combined genuine martial arts technique with a balletic visual poetry that distinguished it from more grounded, purely combat-focused entries in the genre. The film's four Academy Awards, including Best Foreign Language Film, gave wuxia unprecedented mainstream American critical and commercial legitimacy, opening doors for subsequent Chinese-language martial arts epics to reach international audiences at a similar scale. Its combination of unprecedented crossover commercial success and its genuinely poetic elevation of wire-fu choreography has made "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" widely regarded as the most internationally significant wuxia film ever made.
