Hillsboro, OR
Hillsboro anchors what's become known as Oregon's "Silicon Forest," a significant concentration of semiconductor and technology manufacturing that's grown up around Intel's Ronler Acres campus, one of the company's largest research and manufacturing sites in the entire world. That semiconductor manufacturing presence has made Hillsboro one of the most economically significant suburbs in the Pacific Northwest, drawing tens of thousands of high-skilled manufacturing and engineering jobs to what had previously been a much smaller agricultural community west of Portland. The city's population has grown dramatically alongside that industrial expansion, transforming Hillsboro from a modest farm town into one of the larger cities in the entire state of Oregon over the past several decades, with new residential development built specifically to house the influx of technology-sector workers. Hillsboro's combination of anchoring the "Silicon Forest" semiconductor manufacturing cluster and its dramatic population growth tied directly to that industrial base has made it one of the most economically consequential suburbs anywhere in the greater Portland metropolitan area.
VS
Beaverton, OR
Beaverton is home to Nike's World Headquarters, a sprawling corporate campus that's made the city synonymous with the global athletic apparel and footwear giant since Nike co-founder Phil Knight, a University of Oregon alum, built the company's operations in the area beginning in the 1970s. That corporate presence has made Beaverton one of the more economically significant suburbs in the entire Portland metro area, with Nike's campus alone employing thousands of workers and drawing a substantial ecosystem of related design, marketing, and apparel-industry businesses to the surrounding area. The city has also become one of the more ethnically diverse suburbs in the Portland region, with substantial immigrant communities that have shaped a broad and varied local restaurant scene reflecting decades of demographic change across the western Portland suburbs. Beaverton's combination of hosting one of the most globally recognized corporate headquarters in the world in Nike and its increasing demographic diversity has made it one of the more economically and culturally significant suburbs anywhere in the greater Portland metropolitan area.
