Hollywood Sign
The Hollywood Sign originally read "HOLLYWOODLAND" when it was erected in 1923 as a temporary advertisement for a new real estate development in the hills above Los Angeles, and it wasn't until a 1949 restoration — after the sign had fallen into serious disrepair — that the last four letters were removed, permanently shortening it to the "HOLLYWOOD" now recognized worldwide. Each letter stands roughly 45 feet tall, and the sign's dramatic hillside position on Mount Lee, visible from large swaths of the Los Angeles basin, made it a natural symbol for the entire film industry even though it was never actually built to represent Hollywood or the movie business at all. The sign's condition became genuinely dire by the late 1970s, prompting a 1978 fundraising campaign — backed by celebrities including Hugh Hefner and Alice Cooper, who each sponsored the replacement of individual letters — that rebuilt the entire structure from scratch using steel rather than the original wood and sheet metal. For a Los Angeles attractions list, the Hollywood Sign is the essential "the symbol before the substance" entry — a 1923 real estate ad that outlived the development it advertised to become the single most recognized shorthand for the entire film industry.
VS
Universal Studios Hollywood
Universal Studios Hollywood began offering public tours of its working movie studio lot in 1915, making it one of the oldest continuously operating studio tour attractions in the world, though the modern theme park format most visitors recognize today didn't take shape until a major 1964 expansion added rides and attractions alongside the original tram tours. The studio tour itself still runs through active and former filming locations, including sets built for major franchises, giving visitors a genuine (if carefully curated) look at working film production infrastructure rather than a purely fabricated theme park environment built from scratch. Universal has continued adding major intellectual-property-based attractions over the decades, including areas themed around Harry Potter and Super Nintendo World, reflecting the broader theme park industry's shift toward licensed franchise attractions as the primary driver of repeat visitation. For a Los Angeles attractions list, Universal Studios Hollywood is the essential "the theme park built on a real studio lot" entry — a working tour since 1915 that's layered decades of rides and franchise attractions on top of an actual functioning production facility.
