Hooters
Hooters was founded in Clearwater, Florida in 1983 and grew into a large national restaurant chain known both for its chicken wings and for its distinctive orange-shorts-and-tank-top waitstaff uniform, a combination that made it one of the most recognizable and most discussed restaurant brands of its era. The chain's wings, served in a range of sauce heat levels similar to competitors, became a genuinely significant part of its menu identity even as the brand's uniform and overall concept generated ongoing public debate and periodic controversy across its four-decade history. Hooters expanded internationally to dozens of countries at its peak and became enough of a mainstream cultural reference point that it was frequently referenced in film, television, and stand-up comedy as a shorthand cultural touchstone independent of its actual food menu. Hooters's combination of its wing-centered menu and its status as one of the most culturally referenced restaurant chains of its era has made it one of the most recognizable American wing destinations regardless of the ongoing debate around its broader brand concept.
VS
Duff's Famous Wings
Duff's Famous Wings opened in Buffalo in 1946, predating the Anchor Bar's famous 1964 wing invention, and while it didn't originate the Buffalo wing itself, it began serving them soon after and built a devoted local following that many Buffalo natives argue rivals or exceeds the Anchor Bar's own reputation. The restaurant's wings, known locally for being sauced heavier and spicier than many competitors' versions, developed a specific local reputation distinct from the more tourist-oriented Anchor Bar experience, with many Buffalo locals citing Duff's as their genuine hometown favorite rather than the more internationally famous original. Duff's has expanded modestly beyond its original Buffalo-area locations while maintaining a reputation for consistency, and it's frequently included alongside the Anchor Bar in local and national "best wings in Buffalo" debates and food media coverage of the city's wing culture. Duff's combination of its longstanding Buffalo-area presence and its genuine local reputation as a hometown wing favorite has made it one of the most respected wing destinations in the city that invented the format.
