Hot Dogs
Hot dogs have been tied to American Independence Day celebrations for well over a century, and no single event has cemented that connection more than Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, held every July 4th on Coney Island since the stand's founding in 1916, drawing national television coverage and competitive eaters from around the world. The Coney Island stand itself, opened by Polish immigrant Nathan Handwerker with a five-cent hot dog that undercut nearby competitors, became one of the most recognizable hot dog brands in the country well before the eating contest turned July Fourth into its own annual media event. The American hot dog industry estimates that well over 150 million hot dogs are consumed on the Fourth of July alone each year, according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, a single-day consumption spike unmatched by any other American food holiday. Its combination of being cheap, fast to cook over any grill, and endlessly customizable by region — from Chicago-style toppings to a simple ketchup-and-mustard classic — has made the hot dog, alongside the hamburger, one of the two dishes most Americans would name first when picturing a Fourth of July cookout.

Grilled Corn on the Cob
Corn on the cob became a natural fit for the Fourth of July table both for its peak summer harvest timing — sweet corn is typically at its freshest across much of the country right around the holiday — and for how easily it can be thrown directly onto a hot grill alongside burgers and hot dogs with minimal preparation. Grilling corn in its husk, then peeling it back before serving, became a particularly popular backyard technique because the husk itself helps steam the kernels while the direct heat still gives the corn a light char, a combination that home cooks and barbecue restaurants alike have leaned into as the dish's signature preparation. Companies like the Green Giant brand, which built its identity substantially around canned and frozen corn products through the 20th century, helped popularize corn as a convenient, always-available side dish nationwide even as fresh, grilled corn on the cob remained the specifically celebratory, holiday-cookout version of the vegetable. Its combination of genuine seasonal timing, minimal grill-side preparation, and a satisfying char that plain boiled corn can't replicate has made grilled corn on the cob one of the most reliably present side dishes at Fourth of July cookouts across nearly every region of the country.
