Howard Stern
Howard Stern built his radio career through the 1980s and 1990s with a deliberately provocative, unscripted "shock jock" style that repeatedly drew record-setting FCC indecency fines against the stations that carried his show, fines that Stern's employer, Infinity Broadcasting, ultimately paid in full to keep him on the air. His self-proclaimed title "King of All Media" reflected a career that expanded well beyond radio into books, pay-per-view specials, and a 1997 biographical film, "Private Parts," based on his own bestselling memoir of the same name. Stern made a landmark move to Sirius Satellite Radio in 2006, signing a reported $500 million, five-year contract, one of the largest media deals in radio history at the time, specifically to escape FCC content restrictions that don't apply to satellite radio's subscription-based model. Howard Stern's combination of his record-setting FCC indecency fines during his terrestrial radio career and his landmark $500 million satellite radio deal has made him one of the most commercially and culturally significant radio hosts in American broadcasting history.
VS
Delilah
Delilah Rene has hosted her nationally syndicated nighttime radio program, commonly known simply as "Delilah," since the 1980s, building a distinctive format built around softer adult contemporary music paired with listener call-in stories and dedications, a significantly different tone from the shock-jock and political talk formats that dominated much of American radio during the same period. Her show became one of the most widely syndicated nighttime radio programs in the United States, broadcast on hundreds of stations, and Delilah built a reputation for creating a uniquely intimate, emotionally supportive on-air relationship with her listeners built around their personal stories and requests. Delilah has spoken publicly about significant personal losses within her own large family, including the deaths of two of her adopted children, and she has incorporated her own experiences with grief and resilience into her on-air persona in ways that deepened her connection with her audience. Delilah's combination of her decades-long dominance in nationally syndicated nighttime adult contemporary radio and her distinctively intimate, listener-story-driven format has made her one of the most enduringly significant radio hosts in American broadcasting history.
