I Know What You Did Last Summer
"I Know What You Did Last Summer" (1997) follows a group of friends stalked by a hook-wielding killer a year after covering up a fatal hit-and-run accident, becoming one of the most commercially successful films of the late-1990s slasher revival that "Scream" had triggered the previous year. Written by Kevin Williamson, fresh off "Scream's" success, the film leaned more heavily into straightforward slasher conventions and teen-cast glamour than its meta-textual predecessor, helping define the more traditionally styled half of the era's slasher revival. Its coastal small-town setting and central "I know what you did" premise, built around guilt and consequence rather than a purely random killer, gave the film a distinct hook that helped distinguish it within the crowded late-1990s teen horror landscape. Its combination of its major commercial success and its role defining the more traditional side of the late-1990s slasher revival has made "I Know What You Did Last Summer" one of the genre's most significant films of its era.
VS
Scream
"Scream" (1996), directed by Wes Craven, revitalized the slasher genre for a new generation by combining genuine scares with a self-aware, meta-textual approach in which the characters themselves are knowledgeable horror movie fans discussing the genre's own conventions in real time. Its commercial success singlehandedly triggered a major mid-to-late-1990s slasher revival, inspiring a wave of subsequent self-aware teen horror films and cementing screenwriter Kevin Williamson's career as one of the genre's most significant voices of the era. The film's Ghostface killer, with its distinctive mask design and modified voice used for its opening phone-call sequences, became one of the most instantly recognizable horror villains introduced since the genre's original late-1970s and early-1980s slasher boom. Its combination of reviving the slasher genre commercially and its genuinely influential self-aware approach to horror storytelling has made "Scream" one of the most significant slasher films made after the genre's original golden era.
