I.M. Pei
I.M. Pei was born in Guangzhou, China in 1917 and emigrated to the United States in 1935 to study architecture, eventually becoming one of the most celebrated modernist architects of the 20th century, known for combining geometric precision with monumental scale. Pei's most globally famous work, the glass pyramid entrance to the Louvre Museum in Paris, completed in 1989, was initially highly controversial among French critics and the public for its stark modern design juxtaposed against the historic palace, before eventually becoming one of the most iconic architectural landmarks in the world. Pei received the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1983, and his broader portfolio includes the National Gallery of Art's East Building in Washington, D.C. and the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong, reflecting a career spanning major institutional and civic architecture across multiple continents. I.M. Pei's combination of his initially controversial but ultimately beloved Louvre Pyramid design and his decades-long career spanning major institutional architecture worldwide has made him one of the most influential architects of the 20th century.
VS
Frank Gehry
Frank Gehry became known for developing a distinctive deconstructivist architectural style, characterized by dramatically unconventional, sculptural, often metal-clad building forms that broke sharply from traditional rectilinear architectural design. Gehry's design for the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain, completed in 1997, became a global architectural sensation, and the building's transformative effect on tourism and civic identity in the previously industrial city of Bilbao gave rise to the widely used term "the Bilbao effect." Gehry received the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1989, and his portfolio of dramatically sculptural buildings, including the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, has made his distinctive style among the most recognizable in contemporary architecture worldwide. Frank Gehry's combination of his pioneering deconstructivist architectural style and the transformative "Bilbao effect" of his Guggenheim Museum Bilbao has made him one of the most influential architects of the modern era.
