InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG)
InterContinental Hotels Group traces its corporate lineage back to Bass Brewery, a British brewing company that entered the hotel business in the 1980s before eventually rebranding entirely around its hospitality operations and taking the IHG name in 2003. The company's flagship InterContinental brand traces to 1946, when Pan American World Airways founded the chain specifically to provide hotel accommodations for its airline passengers traveling to destinations lacking adequate existing lodging options. IHG operates one of the largest hotel franchise networks in the world by total room count, and its Holiday Inn brand, acquired as part of the company's portfolio, became one of the most recognized budget-to-midscale hotel brands in American road trip and highway travel culture throughout the mid-to-late 20th century. IHG's combination of its unusual origins as a British brewing company and its ownership of both the InterContinental luxury brand and the culturally significant Holiday Inn has made it one of the most structurally distinctive major hotel companies in the industry.
VS
Four Seasons
Four Seasons was founded in 1960 by Isadore Sharp, who opened his first hotel in Toronto, and the company built its brand identity specifically around a deliberately smaller portfolio of ultra-luxury properties rather than pursuing the scale-focused growth strategy of larger budget-to-midscale hotel conglomerates. The company became particularly known for setting new industry standards in guest service quality, and its consistent ranking among the top luxury hotel brands in customer satisfaction surveys reflected Sharp's specific strategic focus on service excellence over rapid portfolio expansion. Four Seasons's ownership includes a significant stake held by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates alongside Saudi Arabia's Kingdom Holding Company, reflecting the substantial private investment interest the brand's premium positioning has attracted from outside the traditional hotel industry. Four Seasons's combination of its founder's deliberate focus on luxury over scale and its industry-leading guest service reputation has made it one of the most prestigious hotel brands in the world.
