Ilias Iliadis
Ilias Iliadis won Olympic gold in judo at the 2004 Athens Olympics at just 18, becoming one of the youngest judo gold medalists in Olympic history and giving Greece a rare Olympic judo title on home soil during that country's own hosted Games. Born in Georgia to ethnic Greek parents, Iliadis relocated to Greece as part of a broader wave of ethnic Greek migration from the former Soviet Union, and his subsequent Olympic success made him a significant symbol of that specific diaspora community's contribution to Greek Olympic sport. Iliadis added three more Olympic medals across the 2008, 2012, and 2016 Games, giving him a combined four Olympic medals across four consecutive Olympics, a level of sustained excellence spanning more than a decade at the highest level of international competition. His combination of a historic teenage gold medal breakthrough and his sustained medal-winning consistency across four consecutive Olympics established Iliadis as one of the most significant judokas of his generation, and his career remains the standard against which subsequent Greek Olympic judokas are measured.
VS
Yasuhiro Yamashita
Yasuhiro Yamashita won 203 consecutive judo matches across nine years without a single loss, one of the longest unbeaten streaks in the history of any combat sport, before winning Olympic gold in the open weight division at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. His 1984 Olympic final victory came despite Yamashita having torn a calf muscle earlier in the tournament, and his willingness to continue competing through the injury to win gold on essentially one functional leg became one of the most celebrated displays of competitive toughness in Olympic judo history. Yamashita's dominance came during an era when Japan boycotted the 1980 Moscow Olympics, meaning he never had the opportunity to compete at that Games despite likely being the favorite, making his eventual 1984 gold medal an especially significant capstone to a career that had already established him as the sport's dominant figure for nearly a decade. His combined 203-match unbeaten streak and his gutsy injured-leg Olympic gold medal performance have made Yamashita one of the most legendary figures in judo history, and he later became president of the All Japan Judo Federation, extending his influence on the sport's development in the country where it originated.
