Illinois Institute of Technology
Illinois Institute of Technology, formed in 1940 through the merger of the Armour Institute and Lewis Institute, commissioned modernist architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe to design its main campus starting in the 1940s, and IIT's Chicago campus remains one of the most complete and architecturally significant collections of Mies's work anywhere in the world. The university's engineering and architecture programs have built strong national reputations, and IIT's Institute of Design, one of the oldest graduate design programs in the country, played a foundational role in developing the field of design thinking as it's practiced across the technology and consulting industries today. IIT's South Side Chicago location and its historically strong ties to the city's industrial and engineering employers have made it a consistent source of engineering talent for the region's manufacturing, aerospace, and technology sectors, even as the university's national name recognition has lagged behind its academic strength. The university's relatively small size and technical focus — engineering, architecture, business, and design, with comparatively little emphasis on the traditional liberal arts — give it a distinctly specialized identity among Illinois's major research universities, closer in mission to Caltech or Georgia Tech than to a comprehensive university like UIUC.
VS
Knox College
Knox College, founded in 1837, hosted one of the seven famous Lincoln-Douglas debates in 1858, right on its own campus — a debate remembered in particular for a gust of wind that forced Abraham Lincoln to climb through a window onto the stage after the front entrance became blocked by the crowd. The college has a documented history tied to the abolitionist movement, having served as a station on the Underground Railroad and educated some of the first Black students admitted to any Midwestern college in the mid-19th century, a legacy the school actively preserves in its institutional history and archives. Knox's small size, fewer than 1,500 students, and its creative writing and pre-med programs have built a loyal following among students seeking a rigorous liberal arts education in a small-town Midwestern setting, with the college consistently placing a high proportion of graduates into competitive graduate and professional programs relative to its size. The college's Galesburg, Illinois location, a small former railroad town rather than a major metropolitan area, gives Knox a self-contained, closely bonded campus culture that its own students and alumni frequently cite as central to the school's identity relative to larger, more urban Illinois institutions.
