Illinois Institute of Technology
Illinois Institute of Technology, formed in 1940 through the merger of the Armour Institute and Lewis Institute, commissioned modernist architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe to design its main campus starting in the 1940s, and IIT's Chicago campus remains one of the most complete and architecturally significant collections of Mies's work anywhere in the world. The university's engineering and architecture programs have built strong national reputations, and IIT's Institute of Design, one of the oldest graduate design programs in the country, played a foundational role in developing the field of design thinking as it's practiced across the technology and consulting industries today. IIT's South Side Chicago location and its historically strong ties to the city's industrial and engineering employers have made it a consistent source of engineering talent for the region's manufacturing, aerospace, and technology sectors, even as the university's national name recognition has lagged behind its academic strength. The university's relatively small size and technical focus — engineering, architecture, business, and design, with comparatively little emphasis on the traditional liberal arts — give it a distinctly specialized identity among Illinois's major research universities, closer in mission to Caltech or Georgia Tech than to a comprehensive university like UIUC.
VS
University of Chicago
The University of Chicago, founded in 1890 with major funding from John D. Rockefeller, built its reputation on an unusually rigorous, discussion-based "Core Curriculum" that requires students across every major to spend roughly a third of their coursework on shared classes in the humanities, sciences, and social sciences before specializing. The university's economics department became so closely associated with free-market theory during the mid-20th century that "Chicago School" economics became a globally recognized term, and UChicago faculty and alumni have won more Nobel Prizes in economics than any other university in the world. UChicago's famously intense, discussion-heavy academic culture has earned it an unofficial reputation, embraced by many students themselves, as "where fun goes to die" — a self-deprecating motto that reflects the university's deliberate emphasis on rigorous intellectual engagement over the more socially oriented campus culture at some peer institutions. The university's Hyde Park campus on Chicago's South Side, and its close institutional relationship with the nearby Fermilab and Argonne National Laboratories, give UChicago researchers direct access to major national physics and energy research infrastructure well beyond what the university's own campus facilities alone would provide.
