Illinois Institute of Technology
Illinois Institute of Technology, formed in 1940 through the merger of the Armour Institute and Lewis Institute, commissioned modernist architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe to design its main campus starting in the 1940s, and IIT's Chicago campus remains one of the most complete and architecturally significant collections of Mies's work anywhere in the world. The university's engineering and architecture programs have built strong national reputations, and IIT's Institute of Design, one of the oldest graduate design programs in the country, played a foundational role in developing the field of design thinking as it's practiced across the technology and consulting industries today. IIT's South Side Chicago location and its historically strong ties to the city's industrial and engineering employers have made it a consistent source of engineering talent for the region's manufacturing, aerospace, and technology sectors, even as the university's national name recognition has lagged behind its academic strength. The university's relatively small size and technical focus — engineering, architecture, business, and design, with comparatively little emphasis on the traditional liberal arts — give it a distinctly specialized identity among Illinois's major research universities, closer in mission to Caltech or Georgia Tech than to a comprehensive university like UIUC.
VS
University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, founded in 1867 as a land-grant institution, has built one of the country's most respected engineering and computer science programs, and its early computing research produced PLATO, one of the first generalized computer-based education systems, along with foundational work that led to the Mosaic web browser in the early 1990s. UIUC's engineering college consistently ranks among the top handful of programs in the country, and its computer science department's alumni and faculty have gone on to found or lead major technology companies, giving the university an outsized influence on the tech industry relative to its status as a public land-grant school rather than a coastal research powerhouse. The university's National Center for Supercomputing Applications has been at the forefront of high-performance computing research for decades, and its role in developing early web browser technology helped lay some of the technical groundwork for the commercial internet that followed. UIUC's massive enrollment, more than 56,000 students across its campus, combined with in-state tuition well below elite private universities, has made it one of the most consistently strong values in American public higher education, particularly for students pursuing engineering or computer science degrees.
