Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy
The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) was established in 1985 as a residential public high school specifically for students gifted in mathematics and science, funded by the state of Illinois and drawing students from across the entire state rather than a single local district. The school's residential model, with students living on campus rather than commuting from a local attendance zone, is relatively unusual among American public magnet schools and reflects its founding mission to serve as a genuinely statewide resource for advanced STEM education. IMSA's curriculum emphasizes independent research and inquiry-based learning, including a dedicated student research program placing students in mentored research positions with practicing scientists, distinguishing it from more traditional STEM-focused magnet school curricula. The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy's combination of its unusual statewide residential model and its research-mentorship-focused curriculum has made it one of the most distinctive public STEM magnet schools in the country.
VS
Bronx High School of Science
Bronx High School of Science was founded in 1938 and, like Stuyvesant, admits students through New York City's competitive SHSAT specialized high school entrance exam, and it has produced more Nobel Prize winners among its alumni than almost any other high school in the world. The school's science-focused curriculum and research opportunities helped establish its reputation during the mid-20th century Space Race era, when American public investment in STEM education was a significant national policy priority following the Soviet Union's launch of Sputnik. Bronx Science's extensive list of notable alumni spans science, including multiple Nobel laureates in physics, alongside prominent figures in journalism, entertainment, and politics, reflecting the breadth of accomplishment among graduates of one of the city's oldest specialized public schools. Bronx High School of Science's combination of its remarkable Nobel Prize-winning alumni record and its historic role during the Space Race-era STEM education push has made it one of the most academically distinguished public high schools in American history.
