Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy
The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) was established in 1985 as a residential public high school specifically for students gifted in mathematics and science, funded by the state of Illinois and drawing students from across the entire state rather than a single local district. The school's residential model, with students living on campus rather than commuting from a local attendance zone, is relatively unusual among American public magnet schools and reflects its founding mission to serve as a genuinely statewide resource for advanced STEM education. IMSA's curriculum emphasizes independent research and inquiry-based learning, including a dedicated student research program placing students in mentored research positions with practicing scientists, distinguishing it from more traditional STEM-focused magnet school curricula. The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy's combination of its unusual statewide residential model and its research-mentorship-focused curriculum has made it one of the most distinctive public STEM magnet schools in the country.
VS
Lowell High School
Lowell High School, founded in 1856, is one of the oldest public high schools west of the Mississippi River and has long been considered one of the most academically competitive public high schools in San Francisco and California more broadly. The school's admissions policy has been a recurring subject of significant public debate in San Francisco, shifting between merit-based academic admission and lottery-based admission at different points in recent years amid broader citywide debates over educational equity and access. Lowell's alumni include numerous prominent figures across politics, business, and the arts, and the school's academic reputation has made it a frequently cited example in national discussions about the tradeoffs between merit-based and equity-focused public school admissions policy. Lowell High School's combination of its long history as one of the West Coast's oldest public high schools and its position at the center of San Francisco's ongoing school admissions policy debates has made it one of the most closely watched public schools in the country.
