Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy
The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) was established in 1985 as a residential public high school specifically for students gifted in mathematics and science, funded by the state of Illinois and drawing students from across the entire state rather than a single local district. The school's residential model, with students living on campus rather than commuting from a local attendance zone, is relatively unusual among American public magnet schools and reflects its founding mission to serve as a genuinely statewide resource for advanced STEM education. IMSA's curriculum emphasizes independent research and inquiry-based learning, including a dedicated student research program placing students in mentored research positions with practicing scientists, distinguishing it from more traditional STEM-focused magnet school curricula. The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy's combination of its unusual statewide residential model and its research-mentorship-focused curriculum has made it one of the most distinctive public STEM magnet schools in the country.
VS
Stuyvesant High School
Stuyvesant High School, founded in 1904 and now located in a large facility in Lower Manhattan opened in 1992, is one of New York City's most competitive specialized public high schools, with admission determined entirely by a single standardized entrance exam, the SHSAT, taken by tens of thousands of applicants each year. The school's exam-only admission process, with no consideration given to grades, essays, or extracurriculars, has made it a frequent subject of public policy debate over the years regarding diversity and equitable access to New York City's specialized public schools. Stuyvesant's notable alumni include numerous Nobel laureates, a disproportionately high number for a single public high school, alongside prominent figures across science, entertainment, and business, reflecting the school's decades-long reputation as one of the most academically rigorous public schools in the country. Stuyvesant's combination of its purely exam-based admission process and its remarkable record of Nobel laureate alumni has made it one of the most academically distinguished public high schools in the United States.
