Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy
The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) was established in 1985 as a residential public high school specifically for students gifted in mathematics and science, funded by the state of Illinois and drawing students from across the entire state rather than a single local district. The school's residential model, with students living on campus rather than commuting from a local attendance zone, is relatively unusual among American public magnet schools and reflects its founding mission to serve as a genuinely statewide resource for advanced STEM education. IMSA's curriculum emphasizes independent research and inquiry-based learning, including a dedicated student research program placing students in mentored research positions with practicing scientists, distinguishing it from more traditional STEM-focused magnet school curricula. The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy's combination of its unusual statewide residential model and its research-mentorship-focused curriculum has made it one of the most distinctive public STEM magnet schools in the country.

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology
Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, commonly known as TJHSST or simply "TJ," opened in 1985 in Alexandria, Virginia, established specifically as a magnet school for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education serving students across Northern Virginia. The school regularly ranks among the top public high schools in the United States in national rankings, and its research-focused curriculum includes dedicated laboratory facilities for specialized fields including astronomy, biotechnology, and robotics uncommon even among other elite public magnet schools. TJ's admissions process has undergone significant public scrutiny and revision in recent years, with Fairfax County Public Schools changing the school's application criteria specifically to address longstanding concerns about the demographic makeup of its admitted student body relative to the broader regional population. Thomas Jefferson High School's combination of its specialized STEM-focused research curriculum and its consistently top national public school rankings has made it one of the most academically prominent magnet high schools in the country.
