Iolani Palace
Iolani Palace, completed in 1882 for King Kalākaua, is the only official royal residence used by a reigning monarch that still stands on American soil, a genuinely unique status among all fifty states reflecting the Kingdom of Hawaii's independent monarchy before its 1893 overthrow and eventual US annexation. The palace was remarkably technologically advanced for its era, wired for electric lighting in 1886 — several years before either the White House or Buckingham Palace — and equipped with indoor plumbing and a telephone system, reflecting King Kalākaua's deliberate interest in incorporating modern innovations into the Hawaiian monarchy. Queen Liliʻuokalani, Hawaii's last reigning monarch, was held under house arrest in an upstairs bedroom of the palace for nearly eight months following an 1895 attempted counter-revolution, a period during which she reportedly composed several musical works, before the building was repurposed for decades as the territorial and then state capitol. For a Honolulu attractions list, Iolani Palace is the essential "the only royal palace in America" entry — an 1882 monarch's residence wired for electricity before the White House, later the site of a queen's imprisonment, still the sole standing royal palace on US soil.

Diamond Head State Monument
Diamond Head is a volcanic tuff cone formed roughly 300,000 years ago during a single, geologically brief eruptive sequence, and its distinctive crater shape has made it the most recognizable natural landmark on the island of Oahu, visible from much of Waikiki and the surrounding coastline. The crater takes its English name from 19th-century British sailors who mistook glittering calcite crystals found on its slopes for diamonds, a case of mistaken geology that stuck permanently even after the crystals were identified as worthless — the native Hawaiian name, Lēʻahi, refers instead to the shape of a tuna's dorsal fin. The US military built extensive fortifications inside and around the crater in the early 20th century, including Fort Ruger, one of the earliest coastal artillery installations in the Hawaiian Islands, and several of those military tunnels and bunkers remain visible along the hiking trail to the summit today. For a Honolulu attractions list, Diamond Head is the essential "the crater that named itself wrong" entry — a 300,000-year-old volcanic tuff cone misnamed for crystals that turned out to be worthless, still the single most recognizable silhouette on the entire island of Oahu.
