Ira Glass
Ira Glass created and has hosted "This American Life" since its 1995 launch on public radio, and the show's specific narrative, theme-based storytelling format became one of the most influential structural templates in the entire history of audio journalism and documentary storytelling. Glass and his production team's rigorous, meticulously edited approach to constructing emotionally resonant true stories from ordinary people's lives directly influenced and helped train many of the producers who went on to create some of the most acclaimed narrative podcasts of the 2010s podcast boom, including "Serial." "This American Life" transitioned into podcast distribution relatively early and became one of the most consistently downloaded podcasts for years, demonstrating that a public radio show's specific long-form narrative journalism format could translate directly and successfully into the emerging podcast medium. Ira Glass's combination of his pioneering narrative radio storytelling format and his direct influence training the producers behind the modern narrative podcast boom has made him one of the most foundationally influential figures in podcasting history.
VS
Joe Rogan
Joe Rogan launched "The Joe Rogan Experience" in 2009, building on his existing career as a stand-up comedian and UFC commentator, and it grew into one of the most-listened-to podcasts in the world, built around long-form, largely unedited conversations often running two to three hours or more. Rogan's willingness to host an unusually wide range of guests, from scientists and politicians to comedians and fringe theorists, within the same loosely structured long-form conversational format helped establish a genre template that numerous subsequent podcasters directly modeled their own shows after. Spotify's 2020 licensing deal with Rogan, reportedly worth over $200 million, represented one of the largest individual media deals in podcasting history and reflected the platform's broader strategy of using exclusive podcast content to compete directly with traditional radio and streaming audio competitors. Joe Rogan's combination of his genre-defining long-form interview format and his historically significant exclusive licensing deal with Spotify has made him one of the most commercially influential podcasters in the medium's history.
