Islas Canarias Restaurant
Islas Canarias Restaurant, founded by a family from Spain's Canary Islands and operating in Miami since the 1970s, built its reputation on traditional Cuban and Canary Islands cooking, with its Westchester location becoming a longtime neighborhood fixture for both sit-down meals and counter-service sandwiches. Its Cuban sandwich follows the classic formula closely, served alongside the restaurant's broader Cuban-Canarian menu that includes dishes less commonly found even at other traditional Cuban restaurants around Miami, reflecting the specific Canary Islands heritage behind the kitchen. The restaurant's multi-generational family ownership and its decades of continuous operation in the same Westchester neighborhood have made it one of the more historically rooted Cuban restaurants in a city where family-run institutions like it increasingly compete with newer, more design-forward concepts. For a Miami Cuban sandwiches list, Islas Canarias is the essential "old-school family institution" entry — a decades-old, family-run Westchester restaurant carrying both Cuban and Canary Islands traditions into one of the city's most reliably excellent Cuban sandwiches.
VS
Enriqueta's Sandwich Shop
Enriqueta's Sandwich Shop has operated as a small, counter-service Cuban lunch spot near Wynwood and the Design District for decades, the kind of unpretentious neighborhood institution that food-media "best of" lists eventually discover but that never changed its approach to chase that attention. Its Cuban sandwich sticks close to the traditional formula, pressed hot and served alongside classic Cuban lunch counter sides, with a small dining room of just a handful of stools and tables that reflects its identity as a genuine working lunch spot rather than a destination restaurant. The shop's location, in an industrial pocket of the city that has gentrified considerably around it over the years with Wynwood's arts-district development, has kept Enriqueta's largely unchanged even as much of its immediate surroundings transformed. For a Miami Cuban sandwiches list, Enriqueta's is the essential "unchanged neighborhood counter" entry — a small, no-frills lunch spot that's kept making the same reliably excellent Cuban sandwich while the Wynwood-adjacent blocks around it transformed into a design district.
