It's a Wonderful Life
It's a Wonderful Life, released in 1946 and directed by Frank Capra, follows a despairing small-town man shown by a guardian angel what his community would look like had he never been born, and the film's message about the significant, often unrecognized value of an ordinary life has made it one of the most beloved Christmas films ever made. The film was a box-office disappointment and only a modest critical success upon its original 1946 release, and its now-legendary status developed largely through a copyright lapse in the 1970s that let television stations broadcast it for free repeatedly each holiday season, introducing it to a massive audience decades after its original release. James Stewart's performance as the film's protagonist, delivered shortly after his return from serving as a bomber pilot during World War II, carried a genuine emotional weight that some critics have connected to Stewart's own real wartime experiences and the broader postwar American mood the film was released into. It's a Wonderful Life's dramatic shift from Capra's earlier, more straightforwardly optimistic films into a genuinely dark examination of despair and suicidal ideation before its uplifting resolution has made it one of the most emotionally complex films to become a mainstream annual holiday tradition.
VS
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, released in 1989, follows Chevy Chase's relentlessly optimistic family patriarch attempting to host the perfect extended-family Christmas despite an escalating series of disasters, continuing the National Lampoon's Vacation franchise's established formula of well-meaning holiday chaos. The film's depiction of Chase's character's excessive Christmas light display, which comically fails to illuminate properly for an extended sequence before finally overwhelming the neighborhood's power grid, became one of the most widely referenced individual comedic set pieces in Christmas film history. Its blend of genuinely dark comedic elements, including a subplot involving a squirrel loose in the house and a chimney fire, with sincere themes about family obligation and the stress of holiday expectations gave the film broader relatability than a purely farcical premise. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation's sustained popularity as an annual holiday viewing tradition, despite modest reviews upon its original release, has made it one of the most frequently rewatched Christmas comedies in American households, and its specific brand of family holiday dysfunction remains widely quoted decades later.
