Jackson State University
Jackson State University, founded in 1877, is one of the largest historically Black universities in the country, and its marching band, the Sonic Boom of the South, is one of the most celebrated HBCU marching bands in the nation, known for its high-energy performances at football games and national television appearances. The university's public health and social work programs have built strong regional reputations, and JSU's role as a significant institution during the civil rights movement, including the 1970 Jackson State killings in which police shot and killed two students during campus protests, remains an important and painful part of the university's institutional history. Jackson State's engineering and computer science programs have grown substantially in recent decades, reflecting broader HBCU investment in STEM fields, and the university's research funding has increased significantly as part of a wider push to strengthen research capacity across historically Black institutions nationally. The university's combination of its celebrated marching band tradition, its significant and painful civil rights-era history, and its position as one of the largest HBCUs in the country has made Jackson State one of the most institutionally significant historically Black universities in the American South.
VS
University of Mississippi
The University of Mississippi, commonly known as Ole Miss, founded in 1848, is the state's flagship public research university, and its 1962 desegregation, following a federal court order admitting Black student James Meredith, sparked a violent riot that required federal troops to restore order, marking one of the most significant confrontations of the civil rights era. The university's business and accounting programs, along with its pharmacy school, have built strong regional reputations, and Ole Miss's law school remains one of the most respected in the state, producing a significant proportion of Mississippi's practicing attorneys and judges. The university's continued reckoning with its Confederate-era symbolism and its complicated civil rights history has shaped ongoing institutional efforts to reexamine campus monuments and traditions, a process that's remained a significant and sometimes contentious part of the university's public identity in recent decades. Ole Miss's combination of major Southeastern Conference athletics, particularly a passionate football culture centered on "The Grove" tailgating tradition, and its historically significant role in the civil rights movement have made it one of the more institutionally complex and closely watched public universities in the American South.
