João Gilberto
João Gilberto is widely credited as the founding figure of bossa nova, and his distinctive, softly syncopated guitar style, combining samba's rhythmic foundation with a deliberately understated, whispered vocal delivery, established the genre's core musical vocabulary in the late 1950s. His 1959 recordings, including "Chega de Saudade," are considered the first true bossa nova recordings, and Gilberto's minimalist, intimate performance style stood in deliberate contrast to samba's more boisterous, percussion-heavy traditional presentation. Gilberto's 1964 collaboration with American saxophonist Stan Getz, the album Getz/Gilberto, became one of the best-selling jazz albums in history and helped introduce bossa nova to a massive international audience, winning the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. His combination of genuinely founding the genre's core musical approach and his significant role in bossa nova's international breakthrough has made Gilberto the artist most universally credited as the single most foundational figure in the genre's entire history.
VS
Antônio Carlos Jobim
Antônio Carlos Jobim composed "The Girl from Ipanema," one of the most recorded songs in popular music history and the second-most covered song of the 20th century behind only "Yesterday," establishing him as bossa nova's most significant and internationally successful composer. His sophisticated harmonic sensibility, drawing on both Brazilian musical traditions and American jazz influences, gave Jobim's compositions a level of musical complexity that helped bossa nova achieve serious critical respect within the broader jazz and popular music communities internationally. Jobim's extensive catalog of compositions, many written in collaboration with lyricist Vinícius de Moraes, became foundational standards within both the bossa nova and broader jazz repertoires, performed and recorded by countless subsequent artists across multiple genres. His combination of composing one of history's most internationally successful songs and his broader foundational catalog of bossa nova standards has made Jobim the composer most responsible for bossa nova's lasting international musical legacy.
