Jocky Wilson
Jocky Wilson won two World Darts Championship titles, in 1982 and 1989, and became one of the most beloved figures of darts' 1980s boom period despite an unglamorous, self-deprecating public image built around his short stature, thick Scottish accent, and openly working-class background. Wilson's rise from a Scottish mining town, where he'd worked in a coal mine before finding success in darts, made him a relatable underdog figure to British television audiences during an era when the sport was drawing viewership numbers that rivaled more traditional mainstream sports. His 1982 World Championship win came against a strong field that included several of the era's other dominant players, and Wilson's ability to compete at the very top of the sport despite lacking the polished public persona of rivals like Eric Bristow made him a fan favorite specifically because of, rather than despite, his rough-around-the-edges image. Wilson's career and personal life were affected by struggles with alcohol and health issues later in life, struggles that became part of the broader, more sobering conversation about the personal toll of the 1980s darts boom on some of its biggest stars, even as his two world titles secured his place among the sport's genuine greats.
VS
Michael van Gerwen
Michael van Gerwen, nicknamed "Mighty Mike," has held the world number one ranking for more weeks than any other player in the PDC's ranking history, a level of sustained dominance across an entire era of deep competitive depth that's distinguished his career from earlier eras when fewer elite players competed at the top level simultaneously. Van Gerwen won the PDC World Championship in 2014, 2017, and 2019, and his combination of an unusually fast throwing rhythm with remarkably consistent scoring accuracy made him the player other top professionals most frequently cited as the toughest possible opponent throughout the 2010s. His three-dart average, a key statistical measure of scoring efficiency in darts, has remained among the highest ever recorded across a full season rather than just isolated matches, reflecting a level of week-to-week consistency that's arguably rarer than a single standout tournament performance. Van Gerwen's rise coincided with darts' continued commercial growth in the Netherlands specifically, where the sport has built a passionate following comparable to its traditional English base, and his dominance is credited with helping establish the Netherlands as a genuine second national power center for professional darts.
