John Higgins
John Higgins has won the World Snooker Championship four times, spread across an unusually long span from 1998 to 2011, a 13-year gap between his first and last title that reflects a level of sustained top-tier competitiveness across multiple distinct eras of the sport. Nicknamed "The Wizard of Wishaw" for his hometown in Scotland, Higgins is widely regarded by fellow professionals as one of the most technically sound all-around players in snooker history, with a game built on positional precision and tactical safety play that complements his break-building ability. Higgins survived a 2010 match-fixing scandal, in which he was secretly filmed by undercover journalists discussing fixing frames, resulting in a lengthy investigation and suspension — he was ultimately cleared of the most serious allegations but fined and given a shorter ban for failing to report the approach, a controversy that briefly threatened to end his career. His continued run to the 2021 and 2022 World Championship finals in his mid-to-late forties, more than two decades after his first title, demonstrated a level of career longevity at snooker's highest level matched by very few players, and his four world titles across three different decades place him firmly among the sport's most enduringly successful champions.
VS
Ray Reardon
Ray Reardon won the World Snooker Championship six times during the 1970s, establishing himself as the dominant player of the sport's pre-television-boom era, before Steve Davis and Stephen Hendry's later dominance came during periods of far greater commercial exposure and prize money. Nicknamed "Dracula" for a widow's-peak hairstyle that gave him a passing resemblance to the vampire character, Reardon worked as a coal miner in Wales before turning to professional snooker, and he survived a serious mining accident that nearly killed him before finding sustained success in the sport later in life. Reardon's six world titles came at a time when the World Championship's television coverage was still developing, meaning his dominance, while statistically comparable to later champions, occurred with far less mainstream public visibility than the sport would eventually achieve during the 1980s snooker boom. Later in his career, Reardon became a mentor to a young Ronnie O'Sullivan, coaching him during a stretch of O'Sullivan's career in the mid-2000s, connecting the sport's pre-television-era dominant champion directly to the player who would go on to match his championship total decades later.
