John John Florence
John John Florence won back-to-back World Surf League championships in 2016 and 2017, establishing himself as the dominant men's surfer of his generation with a technical, progressive style built on his upbringing surfing Oahu's North Shore, one of the most challenging and celebrated big-wave surfing regions in the world. His combination of technical precision on smaller, more maneuverable waves and genuine fearlessness on the North Shore's largest and most dangerous swells gave Florence a versatility across wave conditions that few of his competitive rivals could match simultaneously. Florence's surfing career has been repeatedly interrupted by serious knee injuries, including multiple ACL tears that forced him out of competition for extended stretches, testing his ability to return to championship form after each setback in a sport that places extreme physical demands on lower-body stability. His participation in surfing's Olympic debut at the 2020 Tokyo Games, where the sport was included for the first time in Olympic history, reflected surfing's broader institutional growth during Florence's own competitive career, and his continued elite-level competitiveness into the mid-2020s has kept him among the sport's most recognizable current stars.
VS
Kelly Slater
Kelly Slater has won the World Surf League championship 11 times, more than double the total of any other surfer in history, spanning from his first title in 1992 at 20 years old to his most recent in 2011 at 39 — a nearly two-decade span of championship-level dominance unmatched in the sport. Slater is both the youngest and oldest surfer to win a world title, a combination reflecting a level of sustained competitive excellence across multiple generations of the sport that's let him remain a genuine title contender well into an age when most professional surfers have long since retired from full competition. His technical innovation on the water, particularly his development and popularization of more aggressive, skateboarding-influenced maneuvers on the wave face, helped push competitive surfing's technical standards forward and directly influenced how subsequent generations of surfers approached wave riding. Slater's Kelly Slater Wave Company developed technology for creating artificial, perfectly consistent waves in inland wave pools, a business venture that's begun reshaping where and how competitive surfing can be practiced and judged, extending his influence on the sport well beyond his own competitive results.
