John Smith
John Smith won Olympic gold in freestyle wrestling at both the 1988 Seoul and 1992 Barcelona Olympics, and his combined six World Championship and Olympic titles across his competitive career established him as one of the most dominant American wrestlers in the sport's international history. His signature low single-leg takedown technique became so associated with his dominant style that it's still commonly referred to within wrestling coaching circles as demonstrating "the Smith style," reflecting his lasting technical influence on how the takedown is taught to subsequent generations of wrestlers. After retiring from competition, Smith became the head coach at Oklahoma State University, building the program into a consistent national championship contender and extending his influence on the sport from his own competitive dominance into a significant subsequent coaching legacy. His combination of Olympic gold medals, his extensive World Championship title collection, and his lasting technical and coaching influence on American wrestling have made Smith one of the most significant figures in the history of the sport in the United States.
VS
Saori Yoshida
Saori Yoshida won Olympic gold in women's freestyle wrestling at three consecutive Olympics, from 2004 to 2012, and her combined 13 World Championship titles remain the most of any wrestler, male or female, in the sport's history. Her sustained dominance included a streak of 119 consecutive match wins at one point during her career, a level of essentially uninterrupted competitive success across international competition that few athletes in any combat sport have approached. Yoshida's technical precision and aggressive, high-tempo wrestling style made her one of the most dominant competitors in her weight class for well over a decade, and her continued excellence into her thirties reflected remarkable career longevity in a physically demanding combat sport. Her eventual silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, ending her streak of consecutive individual gold medals, still capped a career whose combined Olympic and World Championship record — 13 world titles alongside three Olympic golds — makes Yoshida one of the most statistically dominant wrestlers, of any gender, in the sport's history.
