Johnny Carson
Johnny Carson hosted NBC's "The Tonight Show" from 1962 to 1992, a nearly 30-year run that established him as the defining figure of American late-night television and set the format template that essentially every subsequent late-night host has followed in some form. Carson's monologue-then-desk-then-guests structure became the standard format for late-night programming, and his final broadcast in May 1992 drew one of the largest audiences in television history, reflecting his singular cultural standing after three decades on air. His ability to launch comedians' careers through a single successful "Tonight Show" appearance, including famously waving a young comedian over to the couch for extended conversation, made a Carson appearance one of the most significant career milestones available in American comedy for decades. Carson's combination of his nearly three-decade unbroken "Tonight Show" run and his role establishing the entire modern late-night television format has made him the single most influential figure in the genre's history.
VS
Conan O'Brien
Conan O'Brien hosted NBC's "Late Night" from 1993 to 2009 after an unlikely selection process that plucked him from a career as a comedy writer rather than a performer, and he developed a deliberately surreal, absurdist comedic style that built a devoted cult following over his 16-year run. His brief, contentious 2009-2010 tenure hosting "The Tonight Show," which ended after just seven months amid a public dispute with NBC over the program's time slot, became one of the most widely covered network television controversies of its era, playing out extensively in real time on social media. O'Brien's subsequent TBS program "Conan" and later travel-focused specials and podcast work demonstrated a genuine ability to rebuild a major media career after a very public professional setback, maintaining his specific absurdist comedic voice across each new format. O'Brien's combination of his cult-favorite absurdist "Late Night" run and his historically significant, very public "Tonight Show" departure has made him one of the most distinctive and closely followed late-night hosts of his generation.
