Johns Hopkins University
Johns Hopkins University, founded in 1876 with a $7 million bequest from businessman Johns Hopkins, was the first American university built explicitly around the German research-university model, prioritizing original faculty research and graduate education over the more purely teaching-focused mission of most earlier American colleges — a founding approach that reshaped the entire structure of American higher education. The university's School of Medicine and its affiliated Johns Hopkins Hospital are consistently ranked among the very best in the country, and Hopkins has ranked first in total federal research funding among American universities for more than four decades running, a level of sustained research dominance no other university has matched over that span. Hopkins's Bloomberg School of Public Health is the oldest and largest independent school of public health in the world, and the university's role coordinating national and global public health data — including its widely cited COVID-19 tracking dashboard during the pandemic — reflected the institution's continued centrality to American public health research and policy. The university's Applied Physics Laboratory, operated for the US government, has contributed to numerous NASA missions including New Horizons' flyby of Pluto, giving Hopkins direct institutional involvement in major space exploration projects alongside its more widely known medical and public health research strength.

St. John's College
St. John's College, founded in 1696, is one of the oldest colleges in the country, and its distinctive "Great Books" curriculum — in which every student follows the exact same four-year program built entirely around original primary texts from Homer to Einstein, with no traditional majors or elective courses — is unlike that of any other accredited American college. Classes at St. John's are conducted entirely through small, seminar-style discussions led by "tutors" rather than professors delivering lectures, and students read primary source texts directly rather than textbooks or secondary summaries, a structure the college considers central to its educational philosophy of direct engagement with original ideas. The college maintains a twin campus in Santa Fe, New Mexico, alongside its original Annapolis location, with students able to study at either or split their time between both campuses, though the curriculum itself remains identical and equally rigorous at both locations. St. John's small size and its uniquely rigid, universally shared curriculum have made it one of the most distinctive undergraduate institutions in the country, drawing a specific type of student deliberately seeking an entirely primary-text-based liberal arts education unlike anything offered at a conventional college.
