Jon Jones
Jon Jones won the UFC light heavyweight championship in 2011 at 23, becoming the youngest champion in UFC history at the time, and went on to build the longest unbeaten championship reign at 205 pounds the promotion has ever seen, a run interrupted more by outside-the-cage legal and drug-testing issues than by anything an opponent did to him in the octagon. Jones successfully defended the light heavyweight title a record number of times across two separate championship reigns, and his in-cage résumé includes wins over a run of other former and future UFC champions — a level of quality across his opposition that MMA analysts still cite as the deepest of any champion's title reign in the sport's history. He moved up to heavyweight in 2023 and won the UFC heavyweight championship in his very first fight at the weight, making him only the second fighter in UFC history to hold titles in two different divisions at light heavyweight and heavyweight specifically, and doing it against a murderers' row of opposition that few other two-division champions have faced. Jones's career has been repeatedly interrupted by suspensions, including multiple failed drug tests and legal issues outside the cage, controversies that complicate but haven't erased a technical and physical résumé most rankings still place at or near the top of any pound-for-pound list in the sport's history.
VS
Georges St-Pierre
Georges St-Pierre held the UFC welterweight championship across two separate reigns between 2006 and 2013, defending the title nine times combined, one of the most statistically dominant championship runs in UFC history at any weight class, before retiring in 2013 while still champion. St-Pierre returned in 2017 after a four-year retirement to challenge for the UFC middleweight title, moving up two weight classes, and won by submission — making him just the fourth fighter in UFC history to hold championships in two different divisions, a feat made more notable by the four-year layoff immediately preceding it. His fighting style combined elite wrestling with well-rounded striking and jiu-jitsu, an approach built around minimizing risk and controlling fights positionally rather than seeking finishes — a strategic, methodical style that drew some criticism for caution but also produced one of the lowest loss totals of any long-reigning champion in the sport. St-Pierre finished his UFC career with a 13-fight unbeaten streak across welterweight and middleweight combined, and he's widely cited by fighters and analysts alike as the most well-rounded and fundamentally sound mixed martial artist the sport has produced, regardless of era.
