Jon Montgomery
Jon Montgomery won Olympic gold in men's skeleton at the 2010 Vancouver Games, delivering one of the signature home-country moments of those Games and becoming one of Canada's most celebrated individual Winter Olympic champions of that cycle. His victory, decided by hundredths of a second over Latvia's Martins Dukurs, produced one of the most dramatic final-heat finishes in skeleton's Olympic history and turned Montgomery into an instant national celebrity within Canada following the Games. His post-retirement career as a television personality and public figure helped raise skeleton's general public profile in Canada well beyond what the sport's typically small niche audience usually receives between Olympic cycles. His combination of a signature home-Olympics gold medal and his role raising skeleton's mainstream profile in Canada has made Montgomery one of the sport's most publicly recognizable champions.
VS
Martins Dukurs
Martins Dukurs won multiple World Championship titles and eight overall World Cup titles across his career, making him statistically the most dominant skeleton racer in the sport's World Cup history despite never winning the individual Olympic gold that eluded him across four Games. His near-total domination of World Cup competition throughout the 2010s, frequently winning the overall season title by wide margins, established a level of week-to-week consistency across a full circuit that few sliding-sport athletes of any discipline have matched. Dukurs's repeated Olympic silver medals, without ever claiming the gold, became one of Winter Olympics' most discussed underdog-of-dominance storylines, underscoring how narrow the margins between sustained excellence and single-race Olympic fortune can be in sliding sports. His combination of eight World Cup overall titles and sustained multi-Games Olympic medal contention has made Dukurs widely regarded as the greatest skeleton racer of the modern professional era.
