Joni Mitchell
Joni Mitchell's 1971 album Blue is widely regarded as one of the most emotionally direct and lyrically confessional albums in popular music history, and its unflinching examination of romantic heartbreak and personal identity established a template for the confessional singer-songwriter genre that numerous subsequent artists have directly built on. Her sophisticated, jazz-influenced chord voicings and unconventional guitar tunings, developed partly as an adaptation to physical limitations from childhood polio, gave Mitchell's compositions a harmonic complexity that distinguished her songwriting from more conventionally structured folk and pop contemporaries. Mitchell's 1970 song "Big Yellow Taxi," with its environmentally themed refrain "they paved paradise and put up a parking lot," became one of the earliest and most widely recognized environmentalist anthems in popular music, addressing ecological concerns years before environmentalism became a mainstream cultural conversation. A serious 2015 brain aneurysm significantly affected Mitchell's speech and mobility, and her surprise return to live performance years later, including an emotional 2022 appearance at the Newport Folk Festival, became one of the most celebrated comeback moments in recent music history, reflecting the depth of admiration for her catalog across multiple generations of musicians.
VS
Leonard Cohen
Leonard Cohen was already an established published poet and novelist in his native Canada before turning to music in his early thirties, and his literary background gave his songwriting a density of language and imagery distinct from most of his singer-songwriter contemporaries. His 1984 song "Hallelujah," largely overlooked upon its original release, became one of the most frequently covered songs in popular music history following later interpretations by Jeff Buckley and other artists, and the song's now-ubiquitous cultural presence stands in stark contrast to its initially modest commercial reception. Cohen's deep, resonant baritone voice, which grew even lower and more weathered across his later career, combined with his consistently dark, spiritually and romantically searching lyrical themes, gave his catalog a distinctive gravity that set him apart from more conventionally melodic singer-songwriters. His final albums, released in his final years including one issued just weeks before his 2016 death, continued directly and unflinchingly addressing mortality, giving Cohen's late-career work an unusually direct meditation on death that critics widely praised as a fitting, deliberate conclusion to his decades-long body of work.
