José Raúl Capablanca
José Raúl Capablanca, a Cuban chess prodigy who reportedly learned the game at age four by watching his father play, became World Chess Champion in 1921 by defeating Emanuel Lasker, ending Lasker's record 27-year reign and beginning an era in which Capablanca went years at a time without losing a single serious game. Nicknamed "the Chess Machine" for the apparent effortlessness of his play, Capablanca's technical precision and endgame mastery were so refined that some contemporaries worried publicly that his dominance might make competitive chess less interesting, since he seemed to win primarily through inevitability rather than dramatic tactical complications. Capablanca lost the world championship to Alexander Alekhine in 1927 in a marathon 34-game match, a defeat that stunned the chess world given Capablanca's reputation for near-invincibility, and the two never played a rematch despite years of on-and-off negotiations that ultimately went nowhere. His endgame technique remains a foundational part of chess instruction today, and Capablanca's combination of natural talent — he reportedly did little formal study compared to rivals — and technical precision has made him a frequent point of reference whenever chess historians debate the most naturally gifted player the game has ever produced.
VS
Anatoly Karpov
Anatoly Karpov became World Chess Champion in 1975 by default when Bobby Fischer refused to defend his title under the agreed conditions, and Karpov spent the following decade proving that ascension was no fluke, successfully defending his title multiple times against a series of serious challengers. His grueling 1984 World Championship match against Garry Kasparov was halted after 48 games without a winner, a decision by the international chess federation that remains controversial to this day, before Kasparov finally defeated Karpov in a rematch the following year to take the title. Karpov and Kasparov's five total world championship matches across the 1980s and early 1990s represent one of the longest and most closely fought individual rivalries in the sport's history, and Karpov's positional, strategically patient playing style provided a stark contrast to Kasparov's more aggressive, attacking approach. Karpov held the world number one ranking for a combined total exceeding a decade across his career, and despite ultimately losing his head-to-head rivalry with Kasparov, his tournament record throughout the 1970s, '80s, and '90s remains one of the most consistently dominant in chess history.
