José Raúl Capablanca
José Raúl Capablanca, a Cuban chess prodigy who reportedly learned the game at age four by watching his father play, became World Chess Champion in 1921 by defeating Emanuel Lasker, ending Lasker's record 27-year reign and beginning an era in which Capablanca went years at a time without losing a single serious game. Nicknamed "the Chess Machine" for the apparent effortlessness of his play, Capablanca's technical precision and endgame mastery were so refined that some contemporaries worried publicly that his dominance might make competitive chess less interesting, since he seemed to win primarily through inevitability rather than dramatic tactical complications. Capablanca lost the world championship to Alexander Alekhine in 1927 in a marathon 34-game match, a defeat that stunned the chess world given Capablanca's reputation for near-invincibility, and the two never played a rematch despite years of on-and-off negotiations that ultimately went nowhere. His endgame technique remains a foundational part of chess instruction today, and Capablanca's combination of natural talent — he reportedly did little formal study compared to rivals — and technical precision has made him a frequent point of reference whenever chess historians debate the most naturally gifted player the game has ever produced.
VS
Emanuel Lasker
Emanuel Lasker held the World Chess Championship for 27 years, from 1894 to 1921, the longest reign of any world champion in the sport's history by a wide margin, a run of sustained dominance across nearly three decades that no other champion, before or since, has come close to matching. Lasker's playing style emphasized psychological pressure and practical decision-making over the purely theoretical soundness some contemporaries prized, and he was known for choosing moves specifically calculated to create the most difficult practical problems for his particular opponent rather than always playing the objectively "best" theoretical move. Beyond chess, Lasker held a doctorate in mathematics and published original research in the field, giving him an intellectual breadth outside the game that was unusual among elite chess players of his era and that he drew on directly in his own writings about chess strategy and psychology. Lasker's eventual 1921 loss to José Capablanca ended the longest championship reign in chess history, but his combination of longevity, psychological gamesmanship, and outside intellectual accomplishment has kept him a frequently cited figure whenever historians rank the greatest players across the sport's full history.
