Kano
Kano emerged as one of grime's most technically respected lyricists during the genre's earliest 2000s wave, and his combination of intricate wordplay and genuine storytelling ability established him as one of the scene's most critically respected pure MCs from grime's foundational generation. His 2019 album Hoodies All Summer received widespread critical acclaim and an Ivor Novello Award nomination, reflecting a significant late-career artistic and critical resurgence that demonstrated grime's original generation of artists could continue producing critically vital work well over a decade into their careers. Kano's acting career, including a significant role in the acclaimed British television series Top Boy, extended his public profile beyond music into scripted television drama addressing similar themes of London urban life that had informed his music. His combination of sustained technical lyrical respect from within the grime community and his significant later-career artistic resurgence has made Kano one of the most consistently respected pure lyricists across grime's entire historical development.
VS
Dizzee Rascal
Dizzee Rascal's 2003 debut album Boy in da Corner won the Mercury Prize, Britain's most prestigious music award, and the album is widely credited as the foundational text that established grime as a genuinely distinct genre, separate from the American hip-hop and UK garage scenes it had emerged from. His raw, aggressive vocal delivery over sparse, bass-heavy electronic production reflected grime's East London council estate origins, and Dizzee's genuine lyrical authenticity addressing his own difficult upbringing distinguished the genre from more polished mainstream UK pop and hip-hop of the same era. Dizzee's later commercial pivot toward more accessible pop-oriented material, including his 2009 number-one single "Bonkers," brought grime-adjacent sounds to a significantly broader mainstream British pop audience, though the shift drew some criticism from grime purists who felt it diluted the genre's original rawer identity. His combination of founding grime's earliest critically significant text and his subsequent mainstream pop crossover success has made Dizzee Rascal one of the most historically significant figures in establishing UK grime and rap as a commercially viable British musical genre.
