Kayla Harrison
Kayla Harrison became the first American to win an Olympic gold medal in judo, at the 2012 London Games, and she successfully defended her title at the 2016 Rio Olympics, becoming the first American judoka, male or female, to win back-to-back Olympic golds in the sport. Harrison has spoken openly about surviving sexual abuse by a former coach during her teenage years, and her decision to publicly share that experience, along with her subsequent Olympic success, made her an influential advocate for other survivors of sexual abuse in sports, particularly within the Olympic training system. Her combination of American judo's historically limited international success and her own back-to-back Olympic gold medals made Harrison one of the most significant figures in the sport's relatively brief history of major American success, establishing judo as a genuine gold-medal opportunity for American athletes in a way it hadn't previously been. Harrison later transitioned to mixed martial arts, becoming a champion in professional MMA promotions, extending her combat sports success into an entirely different competitive discipline following her judo retirement, and her combined judo and MMA achievements have made her one of the most accomplished American combat sports athletes across multiple disciplines.
VS
Yasuhiro Yamashita
Yasuhiro Yamashita won 203 consecutive judo matches across nine years without a single loss, one of the longest unbeaten streaks in the history of any combat sport, before winning Olympic gold in the open weight division at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. His 1984 Olympic final victory came despite Yamashita having torn a calf muscle earlier in the tournament, and his willingness to continue competing through the injury to win gold on essentially one functional leg became one of the most celebrated displays of competitive toughness in Olympic judo history. Yamashita's dominance came during an era when Japan boycotted the 1980 Moscow Olympics, meaning he never had the opportunity to compete at that Games despite likely being the favorite, making his eventual 1984 gold medal an especially significant capstone to a career that had already established him as the sport's dominant figure for nearly a decade. His combined 203-match unbeaten streak and his gutsy injured-leg Olympic gold medal performance have made Yamashita one of the most legendary figures in judo history, and he later became president of the All Japan Judo Federation, extending his influence on the sport's development in the country where it originated.
