KC and the Sunshine Band
KC and the Sunshine Band, formed in Miami in the early 1970s, blended disco with funk and Latin percussion influences reflecting the group's specific South Florida musical environment, giving their sound a distinctly rhythmic, horn-driven identity within the broader disco genre. The band achieved four number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 during the mid-to-late 1970s, including "That's the Way (I Like It)" and "Get Down Tonight," making them one of the most commercially dominant American disco acts of the genre's peak years. Bandleader Harry Wayne Casey and bassist Richard Finch also worked as producers and songwriters for other artists recording at TK Records, the Miami-based label central to the group's success, giving them behind-the-scenes influence on the broader South Florida disco and funk scene beyond their own recordings. The band's horn-heavy, rhythmically dense sound, distinct from the more orchestral disco production style of contemporaries like the Bee Gees, established Miami specifically as one of disco's significant regional production centers, alongside New York's more commonly cited role in the genre's development.
VS
Bee Gees
The Bee Gees, a group of three Australian-raised brothers who'd already had a successful pop career in the 1960s, achieved their biggest commercial success by pivoting toward disco in the mid-1970s, and their soundtrack to 1977's Saturday Night Fever became one of the best-selling soundtrack albums in music history. The brothers' distinctive falsetto vocal harmonies, developed as a deliberate stylistic choice for their disco-era material, became one of the most instantly recognizable vocal sounds of the genre, and songs like "Stayin' Alive" and "Night Fever" became defining anthems of disco's commercial peak. Their songwriting success extended well beyond their own recordings — the Bee Gees wrote or co-wrote numerous hit singles for other artists during the disco era, giving the brothers significant behind-the-scenes commercial influence on the broader genre beyond their own chart-topping catalog. The group's massive commercial dominance during disco's late-1970s peak made them a primary target of the subsequent, sometimes racially and homophobically charged "disco sucks" backlash movement of 1979 and 1980, a cultural reaction that significantly damaged the Bee Gees' commercial standing even as their catalog's broader influence has remained substantial in the decades since.
