Ken Climo
Ken Climo, nicknamed "the Champ," won nine consecutive PDGA World Championships from 1990 to 1998, a streak of complete Open Division dominance that remains unmatched in the sport's history, before finally losing at Worlds in 1999 to Ron Russell. He came back to win three more titles later in his career — in 2000, 2002, and 2006 — for 12 World Championships overall, still the all-time record and four more than any other player has managed. Climo built that record during disc golf's considerably smaller, less commercially developed early era, giving him an outsized influence on the sport's competitive technique and culture at a time when today's larger professional tour and course infrastructure didn't yet exist. His combination of an unmatched nine-year consecutive championship streak and his all-time record 12 World titles has made Climo widely regarded as disc golf's first great champion and one of its most historically significant figures.
VS
Simon Lizotte
Simon Lizotte set a flying disc distance world record of 863.5 feet on October 25, 2014, at the Fall Desert Wind Open in Primm, Nevada, throwing a 157-gram Innova Blizzard Boss on an anhyzer line with a 17 mph tailwind. He broke his own record less than two years later at the High Desert Distance Challenge, throwing 903.9 feet with a 30 mph tailwind — the first throw ever recorded past 900 feet — before eventually pushing his personal best to 1,030 feet, though Australia's David Wiggins Jr. surpassed Lizotte's 900-foot mark just two days after it was set. Born in Bremen, Germany, Lizotte became one of the most prominent non-American competitors in a sport still heavily concentrated around U.S.-based courses and tour infrastructure, helping raise disc golf's international visibility during its 2010s and 2020s growth period. His combination of setting and repeatedly breaking his own world distance record and his role as one of disc golf's most prominent international players has made Lizotte one of the sport's most technically influential competitors.
