Kenyon College
Kenyon College, founded in 1824, has built one of the strongest reputations in the country for undergraduate creative writing, a distinction traced in part to The Kenyon Review, a literary journal founded on campus in 1939 that remains one of the most respected literary publications in the United States. The college's rural, self-contained campus in Gambier, Ohio — a village that essentially exists because of the college — has fostered a tight-knit residential culture, and Kenyon's Middle Path, a mile-long walkway running through the heart of campus, has become the school's defining physical and symbolic landmark. Kenyon's English department has produced a disproportionate number of prominent novelists, poets, and journalists relative to the college's small size, a reputation that continues to draw students specifically interested in creative writing to a rural Ohio campus rather than a more urban literary hub. The college's combination of a strong overall liberal arts curriculum with a genuinely elite creative writing reputation, all within a small, isolated campus community, gives Kenyon a distinctive identity among national liberal arts colleges, one built as much around its literary tradition as its broader academic rankings.
VS
Ohio State University
Ohio State University, founded in 1870 as a land-grant institution, has grown into one of the largest single-campus universities in the country, enrolling more than 60,000 students at its Columbus campus and maintaining one of the most comprehensive academic offerings of any American public university, with more than 200 undergraduate majors. The university's Wexner Medical Center and its James Cancer Hospital are among the top-ranked cancer research and treatment centers in the country, and Ohio State's engineering, business, and agriculture programs have each built strong national reputations that reflect the university's scale and research funding. Ohio State's Buckeyes football program is one of the most valuable and successful in college sports, with multiple national championships and a passionate statewide fan base that gives the university an outsized cultural presence across Ohio well beyond its academic reputation alone. The university's sheer scale — a research budget exceeding $1.5 billion annually and one of the largest alumni networks of any American university — gives Ohio State a level of institutional resources and reach that few public universities of any size can match, cementing its position as the state's flagship despite its size sometimes drawing comparisons to a small city rather than a college campus.
